If your child has not earned a work habit or conduct infraction, s/he will have recess after lunch. If your child does have a work habit or conduct infraction, her or she will stay in study hall.
For safety reasons, parents will need to eat with their child only at the parent table then say goodbye to your child at the cafeteria door. Parents are not allowed to follow the class to the playground.
* What do I do if my child has to miss a day of school?
Absences will only be excused for an illness when accompanied by a note. Your child will make up his or her work in class or at home depending on the nature of the assignments. Absences for vacation are not excused. I will NOT check emails during school hours, therefore please do not email me to gather work before the end of the day.
* What are the hours for tardies and early check-outs?
Students must be in their classroom by 8:50, at which time the tardy bell rings. If you bring your child to school after 8:50, you must go with them to the office to sign them in. Students are considered absent if they check-out (and do not return) before 12:10, or if they check-in after 12:10. Students are not allowed to check out after 3:00.
* What if my child wants to ride the bus home with a friend?
Transportation changes require a written note. Students must present the note to me first thing in the morning to receive their official bus pass. Only students with official bus passes will be allowed to board a different bus. This also includes riding home on the same bus, but getting off at a different stop. To ride home as a car rider with another student, a note is also necessary.
* What about homework?
Your child will have homework almost every day except Fridays. It must be returned the next day unless you are told otherwise. I suggest you help your child learn the routine of nightly homework by completing a little bit each day. Fourth graders should be completing up to forty minutes of homework a night - no more. If homework is taking more than 40 minutes please let me know.
Homework is important for many reasons: (1) It teaches responsibility and time management. This is an invaluable skill that must be taught, modeled, and practiced. (2) It helps your child practice skills that were introduced at school. (3) It allows parents to keep up with what is being taught in class.
Your child can NOT wait until the day before a test to study! It is very important that you help your child study. Do not just simply say, "Go Study". Fourth graders need to learn how to study! Studying over several days in small chunks is important.
